Fat Joe – Jealous Ones Still Envy (J.O.S.E.)

Don Cartagena, Joey Crack, Fat Joe. Il peso massimo (letteralmente…) del Bronx è tornato, pronto a devastare qualsiasi mc gli si pari davanti. Anche questa volta il nostro Joe ci porta a spasso per le vie del suo quartiere, si parte con Psycho Les che fornisce un beat veloce sopra al quale il grassone definisce a chiare lettere il concetto base del disco, puro spettacolo è la terza traccia, col nostro a fare fuoco e fiamme su un beat trionfale autoproclamandosi addirittura “King Of N.Y.” (beh, magari esagerando un po’…), segue purtroppo uno dei pezzi peggiori di “J.O.S.E.”, vale a dire “Opposites Attract”.

La musica cambia subito grazie ad Alchemist, il quale fornisce un beat in stile QB al nostro Joey, libero di raccontare i rischi che comporta la strada (<<you wouldn’t understand my story of life I live/most niggaz that really know me got life as bids/the trife as kids, this ain’t no “Scarface” shit/these niggaz really will kill you, your wife and kids>>). Altro cambio repentino alle macchine ed ecco arrivare Buckwild, che aiuta Fat Joe a descriverci il suo stile di vita, segue “We Thuggin'”, singolo di lancio che salterei a pié pari arrivando così a una delle bombe progettate da Joe, vale a dire “Fight Club”, un pezzo che, grazie anche alla collaborazione degli M.O.P. e Petey Pablo, scuoterebbe le strade di qualsiasi città – figurarsi New York! Pollice decisamente in basso per “What’s Luv?” (secondo singolo, da dimenticare), diss ai danni di Jay-Z in “He’s Not Real” (<<Joe is the Don, you clean, then show me your arm’s/for these tracks, I’ma fiend like a soldier in ‘Nam/only the Bronx will blow your ass outta ya Lugz/fuck love, here we believe in nothin but slugs>>).

Gli ultimi cinque pezzi (escludendo il remix di “We Thuggin'”) non presentano grandi sorprese, anzi nel caso di “Get The Hell On With That” la tentazione di skippare è proprio impellente, ciononostante si lasciano ascoltare volentieri sia “The Wild Life” (con Prospect ed Xzibit) che “Still Real”, nella quale il rapper racconta sinceramente di come sia stanco della sua vita e di tutti i problemi che l’assillano (<<I’m sick and tired of stressin, every day is a different lesson/I’m free-fallin tryna leave this deep depression/my son Joey still slow, my mom’s got cancer in her throat/my big brother sniffin dope/lemme know how many motherfucker wanna be just like me>>). Non siamo ai livelli di “Don Cartagena”, né magari aspettavamo tanto, però nell’insieme “J.O.S.E.” regge bene la lunga tracklist, i temi ridondanti e la presenza di tanti produttori diversi.
